SharkBite Max push-to-connect repair hose is the fastest way to make a quick repair on PEX, copper, CPVC, PE-RT or HDPE. The flexible stainless steel braided hose reduces the need for extra joints or fittings, perfect solution for hard-to-reach tight areas. A newly designed stainless steel collet retainer deliver additional strength and durability and provides a 200 psi pressure rating. SharkBite Max fittings do not require a PEX tube liner and a re-engineered body allows you to insert the pipe using less force and greater ease. No soldering, clamps, unions, glue or special tools required. After inserting the pipe, stainless steel teeth bite down and grip the pipe tightly while a specially formulated O-ring compresses around the pipe to create a watertight seal. The fitting can be rotated after installation for quick adjustments and removing the fitting is just as fast with a disconnect tool, allowing fittings to be changed or reused.

I used these in my crawl space to bypass a fault mixing valve. Cut out the bad section of pipe. Cut a new length of per pipe to fill in the gap. Mark 1 inch back from the ends of your pet pipe (if you do not push it in 1 inch it will leak. It feels like it is in there but I promise you it isn’t. Push it again). There was no welding or soldering, and for about 20 bucks in materials I saved 200 on a plumber coming out and doing it for me.

I was skeptical but the Sharkbite series just works. This will save me many a call to the plumber for pinhole leaks and burst pipes in my old house. But not only is it inexpensive but the fact you can fix this on your own and immediately instead of waiting for plumber with water turned off is worth it alone. You can do this 😉

I bought this for my garage hookup inside the garage as the prior homeowner’s attempted welded pipe was leaking, and its not enclosed in a wall so if any issues with this sharkbite, It won’t be a huge deal. I bought the house in may 2017 and installed this some time after that, perhaps summer or fall 2017. Now Feb. 3rd 2019 and it has completely failed on both ends. I have a shutoff in the basement when it gets cold outside and always shut it off and drain the hose down the steep driveway so its free of all water. Then I have a secondary valve in the basement with a hose going to the basement drain to remove any residual water in the line, and this secondary valve is always open. No pressure in this line when the water is shut off. Worked for a little over a year. I just turned the water back on today as it got up to close to 60 degrees and I thought I’d spray the salt off the cars. Very surprised when I turned the water on and heard water spraying out into the garage. I observed this hose dis-connected on both side and complete failure of the connections on both sides. It literally fell apart on both ends. This thing is complete junk. Had I not had a shutoff valve I’m sure this would have surely failed the first winter. Perhaps changing temperatures hot/cold made it fail? Shouldn’t happen. This is a bad product. That is all.

The ease of use and quickness of repair.

I had never used SharkBite fittings before even though I had worked in hardware stores for many years. I was impressed. My daughter’s water heater had a slow line leak that dripped on an old PEX steel clamp that rusted and allowed the line to blow. I had to crawl the length of her mobile home to repair the leak. After using a hairdryer to soften the plastic line just a bit, I was able to repair it in less than 5 minutes. It was so easy that I kept going back each day just to see if there was a leak. There wasn’t.

So, these may work great, but I was going to put them in my wall, and after reading lots of plumbers saying, if you can solder then solder. I found that I couldn’t remove them, the little plastic thing to remove them was unhelpful. So I ended up having to cut the pipe again. Now, they may have worked, but I was nervous putting them behind drywall after reading about them and the whole point of being able to remove them if needed was impossible. I think in the right application or in a place soldering was impossible, then they would be a good solution. I ended up having to toss all 4 because I couldn’t remove the copper or the PEX from them…

Do Not use these connectors! As others have written, they will break down over time and you’ll end up with black flecks coming out of your faucets. This means you’re bathing in it, drinking it, washing your clothes in this horrid stuff. We’ve had this problem for a year plus. We tried to replace just the hoses but the water heater developed problems so we had to get a new one (and it was only 5 years old). We don’t know if this was caused by the rubber flecks building up inside or something else. Especially worrisome is what this has done to “my” insides after a year of drinking and bathing in this awful stuff. Do not use this product.

I had my plumber use it for the busted pipe during the 2021 texas freezing weather. Today, Jan 17th, 2024 it has given up.

The armored sheathing worked great for a repair in my attic where roofing nails had popped a pin hole in a refrigerator water line ran over head in the attic. No more worries.
